Hot Industry News: Viewers Opted for the Web over TV to watch Curiosity’s Landing

The Mars rover Curiosity landed on Mars this week, spurring a frenzy of excited viewers tuning in to watch it land. More than 3.2 million people tuned in to watch the “seven minutes of terror” via Ustream Sunday night.

Upon landing, the rover began exploring the martian landscape, taking photos and collecting samples. Viewership of the live stream peaked at about 500,000, a number that no other broadcast tv station was able to compete with that night.

The rover also has a highly active Twitter stream, where it has been actively tweeting and answering fans since before its launch last November.
