Hot Industry News: Can You Learn in Your Sleep?

Ever heard of the old actor’s trick of reading your script before bedtime in order to get off book? Well, it may not be a theatrical urban legend after all. This week, NPR released a story about researchers who discovered that people may be capable of learning small lessons while asleep, in a similar capacity to Ivan Pavlov and his dog.

The researchers sprayed volunteers with both pleasant and not-so-pleasant smells while they were fast asleep. Much like a person who’s awake, the sleeping person took bigger breaths when the smell was pleasant, and smaller breaths when it wasn’t.

The researchers also paired each smell with a sound – remember the bell in Pavlov’s experiment? After repeated pairings of the pleasant smell with a particular sound (and vice versa), researchers found that the volunteers began to react as they did when actually sprayed with the smell. In other words, at least on some subconscious level, the volunteers were expecting each type of smell, depending on the sound – and their breathing changed accordingly.

Upon waking, researchers tried it again, with consistent results. The low-pitched tone associated with the bad odor caused volunteers to take smaller breaths, and the high-pitched tone associated with the pleasant small caused them to take bigger breaths.

Another interesting note: the volunteers had no recollection of having learned anything while sleeping.

Hot Industry News: Want to Send Your Friend a Latte? Well, You Can.

Have you ever wanted to make a small gesture of some kind for one of your friends, but couldn’t get to them in-person? Well, now you can – a website called Treater launched this month, offering users the ability to send small gifts via the web, directly to a person’s smartphone.

Well, technically you’re not sending a gift – you’re actually sending the exact dollar amount for what the item costs. So you could potentially send “$4.50 for a latte from Starbucks or a $9.50 bacon cheeseburger from Five Guys.”

CEO for Treater, Jeff Ross, said the purpose behind the website was to give people the ability to do more than simply ‘like’ or send a message. It makes sense, really – how many people post on your Facebook wall saying happy birthday? This way, one of your friends can make a simple, kind gesture.
The site allows users to log in with their Facebook accounts, and brings in Facebook contacts. It also makes suggestions based on your friends’ timeline events – a birthday, an engagement, etc. Have a friend in another state? How cool would it be to actually send them a cupcake for their birthday, even if you can’t see them in-person?

Overall, we’re excited to see how Treater does in coming months.

Is Apple Creating 'Vented' Earbuds?

We learned today via Mashable that Apple has plans to possibly “reinvent the earbud”. The company filed a patent in April 2012 for “vented in-the-ear headphones”, meant to cut back on issues with the echo normally heard while making phone calls.

The idea behind the concept is that this design will improve the quality of the sound through venting or leakage. The company stated that sound quality is often lost in headphones due to the design, particularly during activities such as exercising or talking on the phone.

The design includes a flared portion on the earbud which,when inserted into the user’s ear, becomes compressed against the ear canal wall and creates a sealed cavity inside the ear canal. Because of this, the wearer is then provided with good acoustic isolation against external sounds.

Rumor has it that we could see this product as early as next month, simultaneous with the release of the iPhone 5.

Hot Industry News: Viewers Opted for the Web over TV to watch Curiosity’s Landing

The Mars rover Curiosity landed on Mars this week, spurring a frenzy of excited viewers tuning in to watch it land. More than 3.2 million people tuned in to watch the “seven minutes of terror” via Ustream Sunday night.

Upon landing, the rover began exploring the martian landscape, taking photos and collecting samples. Viewership of the live stream peaked at about 500,000, a number that no other broadcast tv station was able to compete with that night.

The rover also has a highly active Twitter stream, where it has been actively tweeting and answering fans since before its launch last November.

Hot Industry News: How One Man Helped Google Build an Empire

Have you ever wondered about the history of a multinational corporation like Google? After all, building a company requires time and money – and we’re willing to wager there’s no shortage of people interested in investing time into a startup. But who invests the money?

For Google, that’s where Stanford professor David Cheriton came in. According to a recent article from Forbes, Cheriton is probably the wealthiest full-time academic in the world. He considers startup companies to be his one expensive passion, with his most recent unrelated "splurge" being a 2012 Honda Odyssey he purchased "for the kids".

In truth, Cheriton lives humbly - he's owned the same house for more than 30 years, drives a 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon, and cuts his own hair. He also works 10 to 12 hours a day - someone who obviously understands the value of hard work. When two Stanford Ph.D. students approached him in 1998, he wrote them a $100,000 check - one that is now worth more than $1 billion in Google shares.

In case it's not readily apparent, I feel I should mention that Cheriton didn't come by all this money through dumb luck. Having grown up during the Great Depression, Cheriton was encouraged to blaze his own trail - a self-described independent sort who stayed away from team sports and built his own timber fort in his family's backyard.

It seems the old idiom is accurate – hard work really does pay off.
