We learned today via Mashable that Apple has plans to possibly “reinvent the earbud”. The company filed a patent in April 2012 for “vented in-the-ear headphones”, meant to cut back on issues with the echo normally heard while making phone calls.
The idea behind the concept is that this design will improve the quality of the sound through venting or leakage. The company stated that sound quality is often lost in headphones due to the design, particularly during activities such as exercising or talking on the phone.
The design includes a flared portion on the earbud which, when inserted into the user’s ear, becomes compressed against the ear canal wall and creates a sealed cavity inside the ear canal. Because of this, the wearer is then provided with good acoustic isolation against external sounds.
Rumor has it that we could see this product as early as next month, simultaneous with the release of the iPhone 5.
